M-am plictisit de Spec. Urăsc Spec!
Nu te poți ascunde nicăieri de cereri Spec. De pildă, luni primesc o ofertă interesantă care zicea că mă contactează pentru că sunt „pe lista scurtă” a agențiilor de creație și că le-ar face deosbită plăcere (pentru că e șansă unică) să putem colabora. Pentru că am un portofoliu care le-a plăcut și experiență în domeniu, își permit, zice în mesaj, să mă contacteze direct pe e-mail.
Începe cu prezentarea (retailer în confecții) si câteva detalii ale proiectului (o colecție proprie 2011) continuă cu cerința (visual ID: logograma + key visual) și încheie cu mesajul „Design-ul de logo câștigător va primi 1000 EUR + TVA” (folosirea logo pe etichetă și toate materialele de marketing).

Pentru că acest client înțelege ce înseamnă croitorie mi-am permis să-i răspund așa:

„Bună ziua,
vă mulțumesc pentru apreciere.
Pentru că este cu siguranță un proiect unic la care am șansa să lucrez, am să încerc să răspund solicitării Dvs. cu o propunere pe care nu cred caă o puteți refuza.

… Exista o mare diferenta intre capabilitatile unui designer si proiectele in care reusesc sa se angajeze de fapt. In ceea ce ma priveste, nu raspund pozitiv la nevoile unora care doresc sa-si demonstreze siesi abilitatile in toate domeniile, in toate industriile, in toate mediile. Unii se pliaza “pe nevoile clientului”. Din partea mea, sa ramana pliat-fandat, ca doar asta e rolul lor.

Raspunzand acelui mesaj mi-a reamintit ce a insemnat DesNet (reteaua de designeri profesionisti) prin 95-96… cu misiunea sa aiba un cod deontologic. A devenit proctologic in mai putin de-o luna si m-am retras cu mare placere. Poate altadata voi da amanunte despre unealta DesNet si de ce am creat eu jucaria deSenator.

As a long-time CorelDRAW user, and a graphic designer, I was very excited to see the release of CorelDRAW X5. Although I have the full Adobe Creative Suite installed alongside Corel, I often choose CorelDRAW as my primary vector/bitmap application. That said, I was very disappointed after trying out the demo of X5. It looks like only a slight update (like a service pack to X4) – it is not the revamp I was looking for.

I will likely still purchase the upgrade to X5, but it will not change my impression that Corel is becoming less and less important to professional graphics.

CONS (not going into the full list):
- Not made for Windows 7. Floating palettes in the application are not made for Windows Vista or Windows 7 computers. As such they move around on the screen when the app is minimized, and they do not retain their display state. The floating palette titles are also unreadable when they are minimized.
- Same bugs as CorelDRAW X5. Photo-Paint effect previews are still buggy and often break if you turn on and off the preview (for comparing before and after). If you have a complex feathered mask, the preview does not function.
- Most tools are unchanged. One example is the Huge/Sat/Brightness. It is still the same code since version 10 (with the same limitations compared to Photoshop’s Hue/Sat/Lightness).
- Display is still laggy under Windows 7.
- Drop shadow tool is untouched and still an awful tool. You can’t set a setting that will be consistent across objects of all shapes and sizes (ie, same pixel feathering and distance from edges). InDesign has a great drop shadow support. It’s not rocket science.

PROS:
- Color management has been greatly overhauled and it looks to be vastly improved over previous versions.
- File exporting and image saving are improved and require less steps. This should speed up the workflow.
- Some application speed ups are noticed when running on a quad core i7. The multiprocessing support is a good addition (though a version late).

What is a Typical Scenario?
The customer and vendor ask and answer questions. A sample is requested. Typically the customer has a template and FTPs the template, written content, photos and images and uploads them so that the vendor can download all that is needed to start. The work is completed and a quality check is done and it is returned to the customer for approval. If corrections are required then these are done and the finished product sent to the customer. The final payment is then made.

As a manager on a creative boutique I do not want to display and manage a full service agency, always looking for good designers, creative and expansive, violent and loud.
